Psychiatry

The central nervous system plays a critical role in regulating many fundamental functions, ranging from mood to cognitive processes, and from perception to behavior. Neurochemical imbalances, structural changes, or functional impairments in the brain can pave the way for the development of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. Depression, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and autism spectrum disorder are among the major disorders that are the subject of intensive scientific research worldwide.

Depression is a common psychiatric disorder characterized by a depressed mood and a loss of interest and pleasure. Symptoms may include decreased energy, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of hopelessness. It may be accompanied by a significant decline in daily functioning.

Anxiety disorders are characterized by excessive and difficult-to-control anxiety that affects an individual’s daily life. Symptoms such as constant worry, restlessness, palpitations, and difficulty concentrating are prominent.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by involuntary, recurring thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions) performed to reduce the anxiety caused by these thoughts. The person is often aware that these thoughts and behaviors are irrational but finds it difficult to stop them.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a disorder that develops following a traumatic event and is characterized by symptoms such as re-experiencing the event, avoidance, and hyperarousal. It can seriously affect the quality of daily life.

Schizophrenia is a chronic psychiatric illness characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior. Symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, and social withdrawal may be present. With early diagnosis and regular treatment, the illness can be managed.

Bipolar disorder is a condition in which mood fluctuates between periods of mania and depression. During manic episodes, increased energy, reduced need for sleep, and euphoria are observed, while during depressive episodes, low mood and loss of interest are prominent.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurodevelopmental condition that emerges in early childhood and is characterized by difficulties in social communication and repetitive behaviors. The severity of symptoms can vary among individuals.

Rapid scientific advancements in the field of psychiatry are not only shedding clearer light on the biological mechanisms underlying these disorders but are also paving the way for innovative and targeted treatment approaches. Today, early diagnosis, appropriate treatment strategies, and sustained patient follow-up are among the most critical factors determining clinical success.
